What is Sleep Disorder

If you ever ask why you can't get a good night's sleep or why you experience excessive daytime sleepiness, you may be one of many people who suffer from a sleep disorder.

A sleep disorder is any abnormal process that disturbs or prevents sleep or interferes with normal alertness.

Sleep Apnea

Sleep apnea is the most common sleep problem treated at our center. It is a condition which may lead to excessive daytime sleepiness, high blood pressure, heart disease and even stroke.

You may have this sleep problem if you answer "yes" to more than one of these questions:

  • Are you sleepy during the day?
  • Do you have difficulty staying awake?
  • Are you irritable
  • Do you have difficulty concentrating?
  • Do you snore loudly?
  • Do you stop breathing while asleep?
  • Are you a restless sleeper?
  • Do you wake with a headache?
  • Do you wake without reason?
  • Are you overweight?
  • Do you have high blood pressure?
  • Do you have difficulty breathing through your nose?

Fortunately, sleep apnea can be easily diagnosed and treated.

Other Common Sleep Disorders

Other common sleep disorders that can be evaluated at our sleep center include:

Narcolepsy

People with narcolepsy may fall asleep during the day, even when they want to stay awake. They may experience short periods of muscular weakness, usually during an emotional experience such as laughter, anger or fear.

Insomnia

Insomnia can manifest itself as difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep. There are a number of treatable or preventable causes of insomnia. About one in four persons suffer from some type of insomnia.

Parasomnias

These include sleep walking, sleep talking, bed wetting, nightmares, night terrors, convulsions and grinding of the teeth. Many of these problems are medically-related.

How Pulmonary Medicine Associates Sleep Center can help you

Our Center is a specialized medical facility designed to diagnose and treat people with problems related to their sleep. We use state of the art equipment to determine your sleep problem.

We are the only sleep center in Northern Nevada with three physicians Board Certified in Sleep Disorders on staff.

Our staff includes pulmonologists, registered sleep technologists, and a registered respiratory therapist all specially trained in the field of Sleep Disorders medicine. our staff works very closely with other physicians and consultants in the region to help give you the best possible care.

Preparing for a visit to the Sleep Center

At your first visit to the center our physicians and staff will conduct an interview to determine if tests are necessary. If you have had a previous sleep study done, we would appreciated you bringing these results with you. One or two nights at the Center may be required to monitor your sleep patterns. Theses all-night sleep recordings, called polysomnograms, provide critical information in diagnosing and treating sleep problems.

Sleep observations will occur in a comfortable, private room. While sleeping, your heart rate, body movements, brain activity, breathing and other functions will be monitored. The procedure is neither painful nor claustrophobic, and does not prevent getting a regular night's sleep.

During a follow-up visit at the center, a physician will discuss the tests results. A full report of the findings and recommendations, based on your initial consultation will be sent to your personal physician. Our staff will remain available for the long-term management of your diagnosis, if necessary.

Payment/Insurance Coverage

The tests at the Sleep Center are usually covered by medial insurance, but you should check with your insurance carrier prior to your initial visit.

If prior authorization is required from your insurance company for your visit, please bring a written authorization referral form with you to your appointment. If you are seen in our office or the hospital by one of our physicians, we will file your insurance claim for you regardless of the carrier.
